![]() Wine-wise there is so much to discover in Portugal: ancient indigenous grape varieties, new terroirs and time-honoured methods. The Douro, so long associated solely with Port, has recently seen the release of several very fine red table wines which are getting plenty of attention. Cristiano van Zeller makes a fine example at Quinta Vale D. Maria from port grapes and Churchill’s is a wonderfully robust, flavoursome wine. João Ramos is southern Portugal’s leading winemaker. He controls 245 hectares mainly planted with indigenous varieties. His Marquês de Borba red is smooth and plummy, the white is almost Burgundian with nutty fruit, smoky oak and good weight.
