welcome to tanners > European Wines > Germany: Mosel
![]() Our top class German range covers the classic off-dry Mosels through fuller Rheingau Rieslings to the drier Trocken wines from both Riesling and Pinot grape varieties in the Pfalz, including fantastic red wines. Many of the wines are low in alcohol too.Germany’s run of excellent vintages shows no sign of stopping. Whether it’s down to global warming or better growing and winemaking techniques is open to discussion but we are the beneficiaries with top quality wines that are wonderful value compared with other countries.
The Mosel (Moselle) at Konz just outside Trier has plenty of famous names as you go upstream: Ayl, Wiltingen, Ockfen, Saarburg, all are vineyards clinging to the steepest hillsides with that all important southerly exposure. Oberemmel provides classic Saar Riesling with polished fruit from the monopole Hütte vineyard. Past Trier, with its magnificent cathedral and Roman remains, is the little Ruwer valley and the great Karthäuserhof vineyard.Coming down to Piesport in the Mittel Mosel, you snake through vines set out in a great horseshoe over the village, with the Goldtröpfchen and Domherr vineyards producing wines with great richness, typical of the deep soils here. Follow the river to Mülheim and see the famous Brauneberger Juffer on the opposite bank, Bernkastel, Graach followed by the famous Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Past Zeltingen and it’s now the north bank of the river which has the southerly exposition: the famous Urziger Würzgarten with its red volcanic rock; the blue slate of the neighbouring Erdener Prälat, nestling by the river under the rocks; and the Erdener Treppchen. ![]() ![]() |
