Tuscan Stars – La Massa & Giorgio Primo 2007s “It is only a matter of time before
prices increase for Giorgio Primo, so fans of this wine will want
to give the 2007 special consideration.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. With other super-Tuscans selling at over £100 per bottle he may well be right. We believe that it looks good value against equivalent quality Bordeaux reds, and the quality of 2007 Tuscans is very high. Giampaolo Motta at La Massa is producing some of the finest wines of the region and, for the first time this year, the Giorgio Primo is a blend of Bordeaux grapes only, while the La Massa has a higher proportion of Sangiovese. Situated right in the heart of Chianti Classico, in an area known as the Conca d’Or or Golden Shell, it is the wide range of orientations and soil types that lend such great complexity to Giampaolo’s wines, while late harvesting gives them beautiful harmony and super-ripe tannins. Some of you will remember trying these wines at our Christmas Tastings, where they were an enormous hit! At only £138 for a case of 12 the La Massa is wonderful value! La Massa, Toscana IGT 2007 @ £138 per 12 (offer code: EIR03807) “The 2007 La Massa reveals unusual harmony and grace. This expansive, generous La Massa offers plenty of perfumed red fruit, licorice, new leather and spices in a seamless, opulent style. The wine’s balance and sheer class is impeccable. In 2007 La Massa is 70% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 12 months in oak, 10% new. La Massa remains one of the top relative values in Tuscany. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017.” 91/100 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Giorgio Primo, Toscana IGT, La Massa 2007 @ £212 per 6 (offer code: EIR04907) “The 2007 Giorgio Primo (from barrel) is 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot aged in 100% new oak with frequent batonnage. It is a big, rich wine loaded with vibrant dark fruit, violets, graphite and minerals, all of which come together in a richly-textured, sensual style. The wine possesses great balance and is very promising at this stage. This is a very Bordeaux-like Giorgio Primo.” 91-94/100 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (NB Also in Wine Spectator’s Top 30 wines of 2009 and scoring 97/100) *Lying abroad means that you pay for the wine itself now, and the duty and shipping charges (currently £2.17 per bottle) and VAT at the time of shipment in the summer 2010. Douro DOCs are red wines from the most dramatic
wine-growing valley in the world. 2007 is a great vintage and has
produced wonderfully fresh aromatic wines, combining vibrant fruit
and concentration with elegance and structure.
Paul Symington reported “one of the best years we’ve ever seen for Touriga Naçional” and 2007 as “the best of the decade”. Many will drink well young, yet even the most modestly priced will age well and the top wines for twenty years or more. In the 2007 offer we added some exciting new wines from Duorum in the Douro Superior, two from Johnny Graham at Churchill’s and two from the famous Vesuvio estate. They continue to be made from the local grape varieties: Touriga Naçional is the “classic” grape and new vineyards are increasing its percentage of the total planted; Touriga Franca is many growers’ favourite variety and performed particularly well in 2007; Tinta Roriz (better known as Tempranillo) and Tinta Amarela at Niepoort and Vesuvio.
