Grapes from low yielding, 45 year-old vines make a beautifully intense yet elegant Pouilly-Fuissé, the top wine from grower Maurice Guerrin. He ferments it in barrel, working the lees to give roundness and a yeasty, dry finish.

Maurice and Nadine Guerrin have one the most spectacularly situated wine properties in France. Sitting above the village of Vergisson with vines falling away below them, the views of the far off Alps are framed by the Roche de Vergisson on the left and the Roche de Solutré on the right, both landmark limestone escarpments. The Guerrins have a small set-up - just 12 hectares of vines - but make exquisite wines. These are more nervy and Chablis-like than is the norm in the Mâconnais, partly due to the fact that the vineyards are high, at around 1,000 feet above sea level, and that Maurice Guerrin is keen on ageing his wines on fine lees, giving them a pleasant ‘fresh bread’ character.
