Based in a wonderful old winery on the seafront in the main town of Samos, the Union of Winemaking Co-operatives of Samos (UWCS for short!) brings together 25 small co-ops scattered around the island and has 3,500 members in all. These members cultivate tiny patches of ground, growing Muscat à Petits Grains on terraces on the vertiginous slopes of this mountainous island. Still relatively unknown in Britain, Muscat from Samos is considered to be the top sweet wine in Greece and has long been appreciated by the French who remain the principal export market.
