Toribio Lecanda purchased land in 1848, and the estate was founded in 1864 by his son, Eloy, who planted 18,000 vines. In 1904 Domingo Garramiola joined the estate, and was responsible for improved vineyard and cellar practices, and consequentally in 1915 the wines Vega Sicilia and Valbuena were born. Arguably the finest estate in Spain and one of the greatest in the world, Vega Sicilia's wines are legendary. Situated 2,500 ft above sea level on the south bank of the River Duero, yields are extremely low and the estate strives for nothing short of perfection.
