Powerful and full-bodied with touches of liquorice, spice and truffles. Syrah dominates with a minerally feel from the granitic slopes of the vineyard. Montsant is the near- neighbour of Priorato, with similar low-yielding old vines.

Montsant curves around the better-known Priorato in north-east Spain, south of Barcelona. It used to be part of Tarragona. The family-owned estate of Joan d'Anguera is 200 years old, now run by brothers Joan and Josep d'Anguera, who have taken over winemaking from their father Josep and established a formidable reputation. Several of the wines have been anointed with 90+ points from Robert Parker and though the estate boasts some wonderful old-vines Grenache and Carignan, there is much excitement about the Syrah made here. Josep d'Anguera senior introduced a Syrah clone to these northern Spanish vineyards in 1980, which he obtained from University of California Davies after much experimentation with clones from the Rhône and elsewhere. In this baking hot area, the vineyards benefit from planting at altitude on mostly north-facing slopes. Cabernet Sauvignon is also grown and makes it into the blends.
