The winery at Rioja Vega was overhauled in 2001 and their wines have surged forward. From Tempranillo with a little Mazuelo and Garnacha, this smooth, soft, richly-fruited red, has spice and vanilla from 12 months in American oak.

The origins of Rioja Vega go back to 1882 when Don Felipe Ugalde established a bodega bearing his name in Haro. However, following years of the name only being used as a brand, the construction of a new winery started in January 2001. It is located in the town of Viana, 10 km south-east of Logroño. There are already 51 hectares of Tempranillo and 9 hectares of Graciano planted around the winery, and a total of 70 hectares of vineyards is planned. The goal is to produce the biggest amount of grapes of a small size and weight. Therefore vine density is very high for Rioja: 4000 plants per hectare. Low vigour root stocks, high trained trellises and a full irrigation system that stresses the crop all contribute to this. The winery capacity is 3 million kilograms of grapes. There is a modern pneumatic press, medium size, water-cooled 30,000 litre vats, plus some smaller ones to give greater flexibility for specific projects. The cellar, only half full at present, has a capacity for 12,000 oak casks plus 2 million bottles. On the second floor of the bodega is a 100 seat dining room for guests which overlooks the vineyards and the mountains beyond.
