The Chave family have grown grapes since 1481 with a continual succession from father to son. Today the Domaine comprises 14.5 hectares of vineyards, mostly on the hill of Hermitage where they are one of the largest owners and where the estate has made its reputation. They have holdings in many of the most important sites on the hill and their Hermitage is a blend of these vineyards, so necessary to achieve complexity. Most is red although a small amount of superb white is produced both from old vines and with minimal oak influence. Jean-Louis Chave has now mostly taken over from his father Gérard and has maintained the estate's position as arguably the best in the Rhône Valley, alongside developing a small négociant business.
