Producer Profile...
The Margan family first planted grapes in the Hunter Valley in 1965. The second generation of growers, Lisa and Andrew Margan, selected the beautiful Broke Fordwich sub-region to plant their own vineyards in 1989. The vineyards extend to some 300 acres of vines in the Hunter Valley, most which were planted in the early 1970s by Lindeman. These rejuvenated vineyards, now known as Timbervines, are dryland planted, thirty-five year old low-yielding vines, growing in the rich red volcanic clay deposits of the Fordwich Sill. The wines that these vines produce are intensely flavoured with a clear emphasis on varietal and regional definition. Ripe, soft tannins and the restrained use of oak ensure that Margan wines are suitable for early drinking. They are, however, well-structured and balanced and so will develop further with bottle age. Andrew used to be winemaker for Tyrrell's before setting up on his own.
