Equality is a Fairtrade range of wines produced by Vina Lomas de Cauquenes in the Maule Valley, some 350km south of the Chilian capital Santiago. This cooperative winery was set up in 1939 in the aftermath of an earthquake which destroyed many of the local winemakers’ wineries. Initially supplied by just 30 growers, Lomas now takes grapes from 240 producer-members who are guaranteed a fair and stable price for their grapes as well as a premium to be spent by a locally elected committee on projects that benefit the farmers, workers and local community. The ethical production methods are backed up by the quality of the wine: state of the art technology, ripe grapes and the guidance of international winemakers produces modern wines with excellent fruit definition.
