Not yet 10 years old, the vines in this hot, arid valley are producing some wonderful fresh, peppery Syrah, reminiscent of good Northern Rhône, from vineyards 350m above sea level. Beautifully balanced.

Viña Falernia is currently Chile’s northernmost winery, located in three areas along the Elqui Valley, 470km north of Santiago. The climate here is semi arid but cooling down-drafts from the snow-capped Andes ensure a day- to night-time temperature difference of more than 10°C, retaining acidity in the grapes. The 320 hectares of vines were originally founded in 1997 by Olivier Gramola and his winemaker cousin, Georgio Flessati, from Trentino. Today the winery they began is ultra modern and fully insulated against the searing heat, with stainless steel fermenting tanks and the most modern technology to hand.
