The Steytler family makes great reds at their Kaapzicht estate with its views back to Table Mountain. Their Shiraz has soft, concentrated black fruit with hints of black pepper and ripe, Rhône-like elegance.

In the middle of the Stellenbosch area are the Bottelary Hills, gentle in comparison to the savage Simonsberg range which forms the backdrop to Stellenbosch town. The Bottelary Hills are a fine place for generous reds like those of Kaapzicht, made by a great couple, Danie and Yngvild Steytler. Danie is Afrikaans and Yngvild is German and they have a real salt-of-the-earth attitude to their own farm and wines. It’s more braais (barbecues) and 4x4's than helicopters and flagpoles! Kaapzicht means ‘Cape View’ in Afrikaans and certainly watching the sun set over Table Moutain and the Lion’s Head from the hill above the winery is a very memorable experience. They have 174ha of vines of which their gnarled old bush-trained Pinotage vines are the pride and joy.
