Producer Profile...
The history of the Prieuré de Montézargues goes back to the 12th century when monks from the Abbey de Grammont settled here and planted vines. Its recent history starts in 2003 when the property was acquired by Guillaume Dugas, son of Alain of Château la Nerthe in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It now consists of 34 hectares in one parcel of 30 to 40 year old vines planted on sandy soils with a good covering of Châteauneuf type stones. 51% of the vines are Grenache with 15% Cinsaut and the balance Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Clairette, Picpoul and Bourboulenc. Yields are just over 40hl/ha. Harvesting is by hand followed by a skin maceration, pressing and fermentation at between 18 - 20ºC. Unusually for properties here they do not make red Lirac as well and the majority of the production is sold at the cellar door such is the reputation they have earned.
