On our visit to Château Lafon-Rochet to taste the 2010 primeur, proprietor Basile Tesseron was very keen for us to taste his new wine, a lovely salmon pink rosé. After all those rich, tannic 2010 reds it was a delight - juicy, fresh and light. ‘After a traditional Bordeaux rosé you get a hangover’ said Basile, ‘I wanted to make a wine you can drink’. We agreed, taking a sample away with us to taste back at Wyle Cop as a rosé can always taste well after a week of young reds. However this still tasted as well on a cold day here as on a warm spring day in Saint Estèphe so we secured the remaining stock, including a number of magnums. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a four hectare parcel close to Lafon Rochet in the northern Médoc. It’s made in the manner of a white wine, by pressing the grapes rather than by a maceration or saignée so it has the taste profile of a white wine rather than a red with freshness, strawberry fruits and good balance.

Producer Profile...
Guy Tesseron, owner of this and Château Pontet-Canet has pulled the estate up by its heels from the ruin that it was in 1959, when he bought it. The 40 hectares were re-planted and decisions to harvest later, use more Merlot fruit, increase to 40% new oak in the 16-18 months cask ageing have resulted in much more impressive wines, that are on the up.
