There is a Polish alcohol monopoly which was formed in 1919 and subsequently named Polmos, which controlled all areas of production. Poland's twenty five distilleries are now independent again and are starting to produce their own individual brands. Polmos is still the largest vodka distiller in Poland, and has a "no fee" licence to produce the classic brands.
