A wine-based apéritif with a sweet smoothness and an attractive bitterness from the quinine and other herbs used to flavour it. Its invention was encouraged by the French government to ward off malaria in the colonies.

During the middle of the last century this was a highly fashionable drink, but has lost favour since. On the sweet side it is based on red grapes from the Roussillon region infused with an exotic selection of ingredients, including cinnamon and quinine. First produced in 1846.
