European Wines | Germany - Mosel
Many merchants virtually ignore Germany or sell just a limited selection whilst still saying how wonderful the wines are but being unable to sell them. At Tanners we think this is negative. We genuinely believe that these are some of the most thrilling white wines in the world. Riesling is undoubtably king and even within a short distance can produce subtly varied wines and the difference between regions can be very marked. All this depends on buying from top producers who care and struggle to produce fine wines rather than just using a shopping basket type producer with many sources. We were delighted when our enthusiasm and range was recognised by Which? Wine Guide, making us the German Specialist of the Year for 2002.

Vintage Information
2005 is another excellent vintage with good quantities of botrytis wines also. 2004 produced very good typical Kabinett and Spätlese wines. 2003 Lots of rich powerful wines were produced in 2003 with a lot of higher prädikat wines. In 2002 rain at the crucial time ruined hope of a great vintage but still very good particularly in the Mosel -Saar-Ruwer. 2001 is a superb vintage, particularly in the Mosel- Saar-Ruwer. 2000 broke the run of top quality German vintages although a lot of good Kabinetts were made. 1999 has seen a big crop but also very good quality with a lot of QmP wines right up to TBA. 1998 was not quite as good as the previous four years but nethertheless, superbly rich wines have been produced in the Rhine vineyards. In 1997 a fine hot summer followed by fine weather during the Riesling vintage resulted in some exciting wines. 1996 is a mixed vintage, especially at the lower end. Those who were brave and harvested very late will have made some exceptional wines. 1995 produced fine QmP wine, especially in the Mosel -Saar-Ruwer; rich, fat and sweet. 1994 is a classic vintage for long term ageing in both Mosel and Rhine; lots of fruit and acidity. 1993 produced good wines, especially Mosel-Saar- Ruwer. 1992 produced fine, especially QmP wine from the Rhine. 1991 are reasonable quality, mainly QbA, some good QmP in both Rhine and Mosel. 1990 is a superb vintage in both Rhine and Mosel for long term ageing. 1989 and 1988 are both very good.
