More and more wine producers are turning to environmentally friendly methods, but it is less common for wine makers to apply for full organic or even biodynamic accreditation. Those that do are, however, very passionate about it and one winemaker who typifies this is Sam Weaver of Churton in New Zealand.
Sam has written a short piece for us below and is coming to the UK in a couple of weeks to conduct two tastings - one in Shrewsbury on Wednesday 5th June and one in Bridgnorth on Friday 7th June. He will talk about his techniques and show a selection of top wines...

**Please note revised course dates below**
Tanners customers often ask us if we run wine courses. We have the ‘masterclasses’ of course, which are open to all and normally explore specific wine regions. However, taking a formal Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) accredited course is a great way to improve your appreciation of wine and can help anyone embarking on a wine career too.
We are delighted that Antoinette Milne from ‘Wine For Life Learning’ is about to run two WSET courses at Tanners’ premises in Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury. They are suitable for anyone who wishes to learn about wine –...

If you’ve visited your local town centre since Valentine’s Day you will probably have noticed greetings card shops are now bedecked with colourful Mother’s Day cards.
The big day is Sunday 10th March this year. Now if I were making a list of ways I would like to be spoiled (and I might have to in my house!) I would request a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a beautifully presented bottle of wine. I popped into the Cellars Shop this morning and picked out just a few ideas to share.
Tiffany would say she is far too young to be a mum...

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from Monday 25th February to Sunday 10th March this year. If you would like to support fair prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers in the developing world, then you would be doing just that by buying a bottle of white ‘Running Duck’ or red 'Green Drake' wine from Tanners.

These ethically produced and organically grown wines are made by Stellar Organics in Western South Africa. The names come from the Indian Runner ducks, which roam the vineyards eating pests that could otherwise damage the vines.

It all sounds pretty idyllic, but consider...

When I visited our Burugndy growers and producers in November last year, writes John Melhuish, my notes were overwhelmingly positive. Time and again I wrote that we have rarely tasted such wonderfully attractive reds from barrel. Full of life or vivacité, as the growers put it. The lighter, easy style and lower alcohol of the vintage are perfect for showing the characteristics of the different terroir, which makes the vintage not unlike 2010 in that respect. ‘Très Pinot’ according to Nathalie Tollot – certainly a true reflection on what this magnificent grape can do (sorry, can you tell that I’m...

Those in the know have, for many years, followed Pol Roger’s Blanc de Blancs vintage champagne, laying down a few bottles now and then (it is only released in ‘great’ years like vintage Port) to create an even more satisfying, complex champagne.
Where others often fail in making interesting 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs champagnes, Pol Roger succeeds well, perhaps because they can source 70% of grapes from their own vineyards in top-rated sites in the villages of the Côte des Blancs. 2002 is a shining example, which showed well at its recent launch at Armourers' Hall in London. This is designed to be a relaxed evening tailored for lovers of wine and food, but don't worry, it's meant to be fun and not necessarily for wine experts.
The evening includes a five-course dinner with a different wine especially chosen by Adrian to accompany each course with the menu set below.
