Gamay
Gamay, or Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc to give it its full title, is at home in Beaujolais. The now dying fashion of Beaujolais Nouveau has somewhat tarnished its reputation producing very light, banana-scented wines. Now it is undergoing a revival in the hands of the best growers and being treated like Pinot Noir, giving wines with body and class. There is a small amount planted in the Mâcon but it prefers the granite soils of Beaujolais. It is also found in the Loire in the Touraine region, but its relatively thin skins make it prone to rot this far north. Elsewhere, it is grown by individual growers but has no major presence save perhaps in Switzerland.
