Grenache
Grenache Noir, the world’s second most widely planted quality red grape predominates in the South of France and in Spain as Garnacha. Traditionally, it has been blended with other varieties to provide fruit and alcohol, as it can lack tannin and acidity on its own, that said, to prove its quality, some of the most sought after wines in Châteauneuf-du Pape are now single varietal Grenaches. In the New World, its ability to withstand drought conditions made it popular once, but fashions change. It has some success in southern California in the hands of the ‘Rhône Rangers’. In Australia, its prevalence has declined recently but the Barossa Valley still uses it well to make great Châteauneuf-style blends.
