Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is a capricious variety that can be difficult to grow. In the right hands, it makes the most sublime red wines in the world: it is responsible for Red Burgundies, it forms the back bone of most Champagnes, in Alsace - their reds, and the Loire’s Sancerre region - their Reds and Rosés. It travels well and is widely planted. In Germany it is known as Spätburgunder; in Italy Pinot Nero. It is also widely planted in Eastern Europe. The New World seems to love it too, from Oregon and California in the USA to Chile. South Africa produces some excellent examples as does Australia, though those of New Zealand stand out as particularly good in this company.
