Sangiovese
Sangiovese is Italy’s most planted red grape variety, however it is in Tuscany where it excels. There are actually two families of Sangiovese: Grosso from which we get Brunello; and Piccolo grown in the rest of the region. Sangiovese is a slow grower, ripening late - even into October. It is a thin-skinned variety prone to rot but it is naturally high in alcohol and tannin when ripe and high in acidity when it is not. It is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to form the Super Tuscans. Both the Americas have adopted this variety, particularly Argentina and California, though the wines are quite different to Tuscan wines in style. In Australia is works well though it is not widely planted.
