Syrah or Shiraz
Syrah or Shiraz is a widely planted noble grape variety whose origins probably lie in France’s Rhône Valley where it makes the majestic Hermitage and the other famous names of the Northern Rhône. Elsewhere in France it tends to be blended with grapes such as Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and widely across the south of France. In the New World it is usually known as Shiraz producing softer style wines. It has been adopted by Australia as their own but good success has also been had in New Zealand, South Africa and the countries of South America. Increasingly those New World producers that make more structured wines are beginning to call their wines Syrah like Europe to emphasise the difference.
