Chenin Blanc
Chenin Blanc has two sides to its character: it can either produce fairly neutral dry or off dry white wines when allowed high yields; or, with care and work, it can produce the finest wines, as well as everything in between. In the Old World, it’s most famous in the Loire Valley where it is also known as Pineau de la Loire. Here it can produce dry, medium, or sweet wines, still or sparkling. The best are sublime with minerality and steeliness such as Savennières or rich and characterful like the dessert wines of Vouvray or Coteaux du Layon. Elsewhere in the world, it is used to produce dry whites perhaps lacking in varietal character but refreshing to drink.
