Pinot Grigio or Gris

Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris as a variety has seen dramatic growth from a little known variety grown in Alsace as Pinot Gris; a smattering grown over the border in Germany as Grauburgunder and as a dry white from Northern Italy where it is known as Pinot Grigio, to the all conquering white wine of choice all over the UK. It has replaced Chardonnay as the ‘brand’ meaning ‘dry white wine’ to many. This popularity has seen a rise in plantings across the vinous globe. It is a dark skinned variety sometimes with a pink tinge, which allows it to make rosé wine as well. There are many neutral inexpensive versions but the best are beautifully honeyed, rich and full flavoured.
