Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is a truly international variety responsible for some of the most popular styles of dry aromatic white wines. Wherever it is planted it remains recognisable. In the Loire Valley it is responsible for Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé, Menetou Salon, Quincy, to name but a few. Here it expresses the mineral side of its character. In Bordeaux, it is found in both the sweet and the dry whites though usually blended with Sémillon and often oak-aged to give weight and depth. This variety thrives in the New World producing overtly flavoured whites with flavours from gooseberry fool to passion fruit. It particularly excels in New Zealand though there are great examples from most countries.
