Alsace
The tall, thin flûte d’Alsace bottles of north-east France can understandably be mistaken for German wines, but despite this obvious Germanic influence, Alsace has its own identity. In contrast to the varying levels of residual sugar in many German whites, Alsace whites are usually dry and are typically aromatic or floral in character. We have the superb Riesling Kaefferkopf and the delightful Muscat Réserve Particulière from Henri Ehrhart, stalwarts of the Tanners wine list. Not forgetting Alsace’s richer, more concentrated answer to Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris, and the spice and body of a decent Gewürztraminer from the Sorg stable. The region is dominated by co-operatives like Pfaffenheim, a reliable leader in its field.
