Barolo
The famous name has been in danger of eclipse by the advances made in Tuscany and discoveries further south in recent times. However there is no shortage of class in the principal player, Nebbiolo, even though you have to wait some time for the hard, almost brutal edge to soften. When it does, the mature flavours and complex feel flood through on the palate, enhancing the refined savoury quality of the wine. Don’t necessarily expect a ‘big’ wine, as alcohol levels need not be high, but enjoy the length, which is a trademark of the grape.
