Rioja
Rioja is famous for its oak-matured Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva red wines, but this famous wine region in north-east Spain offers a whole host of wine styles. As well as traditional reds with those distinctive vanilla flavours from American oak, many bodegas like Rioja Vega are also showcasing rounded, more ‘modern’ wines with concentrated black fruits and French oak. If you’re looking for a lighter red to accompany mixed tapas, vino joven (literally young wine) is a fresh, juicy un-oaked version of the Tempranillo grape. White wine production has shifted its focus from full-bodied oaked whites to cleaner, crisper whites exploiting the fresh fruity character of grapes such as Viura and Verdejo.
