New Zealand
Sauvignon Blanc is dominant in New Zealand although recent overproduction has fuelled a dramatic increase in disappointing, low price offerings with nondescript provenance. Whilst this may have satisfied the thirst for cheap Marlborough Sauvignon, it has done nothing to demonstrate the finer points of this fantastic grape variety, crisp, ozone-fresh qualities that have been the hallmark of New Zealand’s greatest wine export. Thankfully more normal yields will restore the balance and move the focus back to quality at a sensible price and help to shift attention to the other varietals that this wonderful country is equally famous for such as Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
