Roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic
João Portugal Ramos
Ramos started winemaking in Alentejo with Quinta do Carmo in 1985. Despite a successful consultancy career, Ramos was, though, always keen to make his own wines and in 1990 began acquiring vineyard land in the region. An initial plot of just 6 hectares, with a further 45 hectares under contract, has grown considerably since then to 150 hectares of his own land and an additional 200 over which he has complete viticultural control. Winemaking in the area in general has expanded exponentially since the 1980s as others too have realised the potential of Alentejo. However, the upfront fruit and clear varietal labelling of Ramos’ wines have made them particularly popular on the export market. His property is Monte de Serrado Pinheiro at Estremoz.
A very good year, possibly even great!
Another drought year a little more difficult than 2009.
A drought year, so yields are small but concentrated wines resulted.
After a slow start to the year, summer was dry and cool, the resulting
wines are good.
From the south of Portugal, this is a brilliantly pure, sweet, smoothly fruited red with lush berry fruit and enough spicy grip to keep it food-friendly. Great on its own, it would be an ideal partner for classic beef lasagne.

Sometimes jokingly refered to as 'Portugal's Barossa', the Alentejo is one of the most progressive of the country's wine regions. This blend of the red-juiced Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez (Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Cabernet is a true United Nations mix, aged in oak to add further gloss to the ripe fruit. A lovely background of tobacco and graphite is laden with those thick berry scents, before a mouth-filling flood of juicy black fruits hits the palate, all tinged with spice and smokiness, but with a lively, crisp edge too, the pert acidity and fine tannic grip giving some precision and steel. 90/100

Like the white, this terrific mix of umpteen Portuguese and French varieties, from innovative Joao Portugal Ramos, delivers dazzling flavours with this weighty, tangy, 14 per cent alcohol red bursting with pickled cherry and damson plum fruit.
The Times, 15th September 2012
Great value! A red like this shows exactly what Portugal can deliver by blending cleverly and bringing out the best of the fruit. Here, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon join forces and unite to pump out some tangy, vibrant modern cherry-ish fruit flavours that just want to grab new friends among the world of wine fans who are hunting for flavoursome wine that doesn't require a second mortgage to be enjoyed throughout the year.
