South Africa
The style of South African wines sits somewhere between the full flavours of Australia or Chile and those of France. It certainly isn’t a cool climate area, however carefully sited vineyards enjoy the cooling effects of see breezes or the benefit of being high up in the mountains. Chenin Blanc is the most important white grape but is increasingly losing out to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Cabernet Sauvignon is the number one red grape while Pinotage, a somewhat strange but unique variety, is widely planted. Merlot, Pinot Noir and, increasingly, Syrah are more niche in their production. In summary, South Africa is a great source of everyday or party wines, as well as special bottles for any occasion.
