Considering that the fame of the whole country revolves around one red grape, Tempranillo, it is remarkable that the breadth of winemaking and the types of wine Spain produces are so varied. Time in oak to make Crianzas (one year) Reservas (normally two years) and Gran Reservas (often three years) and blending with other indigenous (and international) grapes has helped, but in the main a Spanish winemaker wants to produce a warm, mellow, often powerful glass of red with a rich slug of oak and a spicy finish. Don’t forget the whites! Two of the best are Verdejo, which has a fresh, almost Sauvignon Blanc character from Rueda, and glorious, peachy Albariño, star of the region of Galicia – it’s a ‘must try’.
