Today’s wines from California, Washington and Oregon are a far cry from the blowsy, sweet and over-oaked style that they used to be. The good growers are going out of their way to produce a fresher style with more character that is better suited to food. The Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of Sonoma are looking increasingly good value compared to Burgundies of the same quality whilst the Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc of Oregon can give the best that Alsace and Germany produces a run for their money. The iconic Zinfandels continue to provide pleasure for their rich mouth-filling style while the Cabernets of Napa and Santa Cruz deliver power and elegance in the same package.
