Rémi Benon’s estate is situated outside of the village of Juliénas on the road to La Chapelle de Guinchay. Rémi, helped by his wife Paola, runs this 7.5 ha estate. He is the third generation to farm here, but is the 10th generation of his family to be a viticulturist. The estate is made up of 3ha of Chénas, 1.5ha of Saint-Amour, 1ha of Juliénas, with the balance Beaujolais -Villages. He took over the reins at the tender age of 16 following the untimely death of his father in 1982. He is not organic as he uses herbicides in the vineyards, which are densely planted and grassed through, though he is experimenting with replanting slightly further apart which will enable him to mechanise the weeding. He has a small neat winery opposite his house where gravity plays its part in the wine making which is Burgundian rather than the traditional carbonic maceration used in Beaujolais. Fermentation and ageing takes place in epoxy-lined concrete tanks.
The run of wonderful vintages continues 2011 is not quite as powerful
as 2009 though better than the excellent 2010.
Another very good vintage, perhaps not quite the power of the 2009 but
a little fresher and more elegant.
The best vintage since 1959, some truly amazing wines produced.
A difficult year with a lot of rain through out the season.
Rich wines with a real fleshy character.
A beautiful vintage harvested in perfect conditions.
Excellent wines, some hail but on the whole the season was dry.
Disappointing a fine September arrived too late to rescue an otherwise
A lovely hot year producing brilliant, full-flavoured wines.
Produced lovely, fruity, charming wines.
Produced lovely, fruity, charming wines.
A good vintage in Beaujolais with relatively full and generous wine.
Beaujolais... no don’t stop reading! One of the must underrated regions of France, it has struggled to come out from under the novelty of Beaujolais Nouveau, but it is now doing better aided by a run of three fantastic vintages 2009, 2010 & 2011. This new wave of Beaujolais is still made from 100% Gamay but the good growers treat it more like Pinot Noir using Burgundian methods in the winery. This is packed with juicy raspberry fruit, but what this has, which wines of old have lacked, is backbone. It has some structure and some body which makes it a far more serious proposition for food. Try it with simply roast chicken, or roast pork, delicious.
Buyer, Buying Team
This is a remarkable Beaujolais Cru - difficult to pronounce so regrettably avoided by many. But it's brilliant, with a full, rich softness when you drink it, much more like (and in fact superior to, imho) good Southern Burgundy. There's the structure for it to last, too, and while I have thoroughly enjoyed a succession of bottles over the last nine months, most recently I drank it during that hot spell in March, on its own in the garden. Fabulous.
