Burgundy En Primeur
"The red burgundies from 2012 are super wines. They have silky textures, soft tannins, and plenty of stuffing without being fat. The fruit is precise and poised - a mixture of red and black fruits - and in no way do they have the sometimes jammy-ness of a hot year. They are the product of extremely low yields, the vines pushing all those flavours into significantly less berries. As ever it is early days as to when to drink these wines, but our initial reaction is that they are mid-term wines with some having the ability to go the long distance. Comparing with other vintages, as ever, is difficult but 2010 is probably the closest recent vintage, then maybe 2006 and 2000; all impressive years.
There are many excellent white Burgundies from 2012 and a case or two will provide some superb drinking mostly in the short to medium term. It would be a good vintage with which to start for anyone who is used to buying their white wines hand-to-mouth, providing some seriously lovely dinner party wines at a discount off shelf prices. The richness and opulence will give immediate pleasure while the more expensive wines will, as ever, take a year or two for the component parts to knit together, with well matured white burgundy still being one of life's great treats! It is a super year for Chablis, the Côte Chalonnnaise and Mâconnais all of which display forward and rich wines.
