Burgundy En Primeur
"Many En Primeur campaigns are unfortunately tarred by the ‘Bordeaux Effect’ which is a way of saying, ‘If it’s not good there, it’s not good anywhere’! This is blatantly nonsense; wine made in Bordeaux 380 miles away under an Atlantic influence is never going to be the same as that from a continental climate well away from the sea. The greatness of a vintage, however, is often embedded into the collective psyche by the Easter tastings in Bordeaux, and Burgundy, evaluated in the following November, often struggles to impose its character. What a shame!
This year, 2013, while being acknowledged by the winemakers we spoke to as a very difficult year, has produced some superb wines. There was a huge amount of work to do in the vineyard, and some more in the cellars, but Pinot Noir is a grape variety that thrives in adversity - and the results in some cellars are terrific - while a cooler year such as this brings a purity of flavour (and longevity) to Chardonnay.
Our travels suggested it is very good in the Côte de Nuits, with layers of rich, dark fruit backed up by pure, clean flavours. The wines are fresh and fruity, not always built for the long term, but attractive and drinkable. The Côte de Beaune had a more difficult time with the late season, slightly higher acidity (lovely in the whites) and the ravages of hail throughout. In both areas the higher slopes struggled for ripeness and we have only selected the best and prettiest wines (often ‘old friends’, which says something for our buying over the years!). These are for earlier drinking; some growers think the 2013s will drink earlier than the ’12s, although we don’t always agree.
The week of tastings saw us taste 307 wines at 32 producers, mostly from barrel. The potential in many was clear, and we were able to select some excellent wines, in quite varied styles, which will give you great pleasure and age very well. We have erred towards the ‘tried & tested’ this year, but been careful to switch to different cuvées where we feel a grower’s particular vineyard has performed better."
