Rhône, vintage 2014 - Offer Closed

"The 2014 vintage is superb for whites and the reds warrant attention too as they are of such a charming and attractive style. Generalisations are particularly difficult in the Rhône due to the distances between the North and South; it takes nearly two hours to drive from Côte-Rôtie in the North to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The whites of the North, most notably from Condrieu, are fantastic; the beautiful ripe peachy/apricot fruit of the Viognier grape is perfectly balanced with a fresh citrus character. André Perret puts this down to small yields this year – about half of what he produces in a ‘normal’ year – but he describes it as “une belle millésime”. The same is true of the whites of Saint-Joseph, Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage which show a lovely purity of fruit and minerality often hidden in sunnier vintages. The reds in the North have surprising depth in spite of some rain during harvest. There is some lovely brambly, cherry fruit in these wines and not too much black pepper character, a sign of marginal ripeness in Syrah grapes.

In the South the style of the wines is very much in keeping with the North, with the whites, harvested before the rains, expressing themselves very well. Many more growers are choosing to block the second, malolactic, fermentation (that turns stronger tasting malic acid to the softer lactic acid), which down here means the whites are so much fresher than they would have been 10 years ago. The reds in the South are more varied with the villages to the east of Châteauneuf such as Rasteau, Gigondas, Séguret and Vacqueyras doing better, thanks to less rain and more slopes. What the reds all have in common is the charming red fruit character that leaps from the glass. These are appealing wines for the short to mid-term: they may not be profound, but always attractive, supple and easy to drink."
