Brandy
The name Brandy is derived from the Dutch ‘brandewijn’ meaning ‘burnt wine’. Brandy, Cognac and Armagnac are spirits produced from distilled wine and are differentiated basically by their geographic designations.
Cognac and Armagnac are brandies that can only be produced in their designated appellations in France. Both appellations are in Southwest France; Cognac borders the Atlantic to the north of Bordeaux, and the Armagnac region lies inland, South of Bordeaux. Brandy can be - and is - produced in many parts of the world, notably from South Africa, Spain and now California.
