A Red Christmas Dozen
Malbec from Argentina is fast becoming the nation’s favourite red and it’s joined in this case by wines from Bordeaux, Rhône, Douro, Southern Italy and Northern Spain. For those that love rich reds, this is not to be missed.
2x Piedra Negra Malbec, Alta Coleccion, Mendoza, Lurton, Argentina
A medium-bodied, supple wine with soft tannins. Typically generous, concentrated black berry fruit, fat and spicy with a long lingering finish. Brilliant for roasts and barbecues!
2x Castillo Monjardin Crianza, Origen, Navarra, Spain
A rich, warming nose with hints of coffee and chocolate amongst the fruit, there is good weight and substance on the palate with great purity, well-balanced tannins and a very attractive finish.
2x Sarmentine, Bordeaux, F Thienpont, France
From a small 3 hectare vineyard, near to Saint Emilion, this vibrant, organic red is full of round, supple fruit with a delicious herbal note. Ageing in tank, rather than barrel, emphasises its fruity character.
2x Arbouse, Massif d’Uchaux, Côtes du Rhône-Villages, France
Good, rich fruit and silky texture with cherry and blackberry flavours and spicy length.
2x Cantele Primitivo, Salento, Italy
Delicious, ripe dark raspberry and mulberry fruit, lovely and soft with just a hint of coffee.
2x Tons de Duorum, Douro Tinto, Portugal
A great introduction to Douro DOC wine, medium weight, very pretty wine, very round and soft, easy going, juicy black plums and black pepper, actually quite intense at this level..
