The leading central valley cabernet sauvignon blends have more balance and less heft now, so try the awesome 2014 Acrux, a Bordeaux-inspired, Colchagua jewel, all spicy, cassis, leather and red fruit charm.
A more-or-less Bordeaux blend of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Malbec, Carmenère and Petit Verdot, but with 17% Syrah – at least that's the blend in this vintage: it varies from year to year, as does the length of time in oak barrels (anywhere between 18 and 24 months, although they're always both French and American). The Syrah gives a raspberry note, as well as a whiff of peppery smoke to the lush, concentrated black fruit and polished, soft tannins. It should evolve nicely over the next few years.
