Armenia Wine Company

Armenia has a long history of winemaking with archaeologists discovering evidence dating from 4200BC. Needless to say there’s competition with neighbouring Georgia for the oldest winemaking artefacts. More recently though Armenian wine undergone a renaissance and the Armenia Wine Company has been at the forefront of this. It is a family-owned company, whose ethos is ‘the love for our country, respect for our traditions and nature’! Vineyards were planted in 2006 and the winery built in 2008.

The vineyards are situated in four regions (Armavir, Ararat, Aragatsotn and Vayots Dzor) each with their own soils and microclimate which allows a diversity of styles to be maintained in the wines. Vayots Dzor famous for the discovery in a cave of what might be the world’s oldest winemaking facility dating back over 6000 years. Here are the highest vineyards in Armenia at up to 1650 metres above sea level and also one of the homes of the Areni grape, widely used for red wines. Other varieties used in the four regions include indigenous varieties such as Karmrahyut (Red Juice), Haghtanak (Victory), Voskehat (Golden Berry), Tshilar and Garan Amak as well as Rkatsiteli and Saperavi that are widely used in the South Caucasus and elsewhere. The altitude of the vineyards yields wines with freshness and balance. Grapes are harvested during the cooler parts of the day and night and fermentation is in stainless steel. Specialist winemaking consultants from around the world are employed.
