Australian Explorer

When you consider the size of Australia and the distances between its wine regions, then you understand why a taster case can be a useful barometer of place. The Clare Valley is certainly cool – some plots are locally known as Alcatraz for their welcoming nature! But Riesling, in all its lime-flavoured glory, loves growing there. Semillon does well too on the lower slopes, again with a lick of fresh lemony acidity, while miles away in New South Wales, north of Sydney, the Hunter Valley makes iconic whites capable of serious ageing.

Aussie reds have a big reputation, but again it depends on the place and the grower. Our own-label Shiraz comes from Victoria where it develops a plummy, soft character but isn’t too big, while Kaesler’s Rhône-style red in Barossa is perhaps the opposite, stacked with layers of richness. Head west meanwhile to the Margaret River in Western Australia, where the cooler climate favours Merlots and Cabernets, a blend that develops poise and balance without knocking your socks off.
