Bergerac Star Crossed Lovers - Half Dozen

The Bergerac region is oft overlooked in the rush for the wines of its more prestigious near neighbour, Bordeaux. Like many such regions this means it is excellent hunting ground for those looking for something of a bargain. Ch teau Le Fag  and Ch teau de Tiregand are our two favourite growers in the region, and it's not only us who think so. The secret may finally be out with the latest issue of Decanter Magazine and the article ‘The wines of Southwest France: a buyer's guide’ by Andy Howard MW. “Tiregand is a leading producer in the red-only Bergerac AOP of Pecharmant. Located in the east of Bergerac, the soil here is sand and gravel mixed with clay and iron deposits, giving Pecharmant wines a distinctive flavour. Wine-director Francois-Xavier de Saint-Exupery has matured this Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend in used barrels from Mouton-Rothschild. With notes of cassis and dark cherry, supple tannins and well-integrated oak, this is a classy Bergerac red which will age very well. Drinking Window 2021 – 2026. 92 points”. Perhaps its time to seek out this region?
