I love scallops and so matching these recipes was the perfect excuse for me to indulge in some delicious food, and equally delicious wines of course!
For the golden Scallops with Chorizo, Broad Bean and Mint my first pick is the gorgeous Domaine de la Cendrillon Nuance Blanc which has inviting aromas of honeysuckle, peach and fresh citrus fruit. The palate offers us some more tropical fruit combined with ripe apple, white peach and a citrus core followed by lovely minerality, a hint of saline and a rich vanilla spice finish. This white comes from the Corbières region in Southern France and is made using a blend of eight different grape varieties!
Alternatively, my love of Chardonnay continues with Château Rives-Blanques Odyssée, Limoux which I believe offers incredible value for money, showcasing an orchard fruit medley entwined with apricots, lemon curd and pineapple along with ample amounts of buttery goodness. Despite this being a multi-layered and rich white, it still retains an elegance and freshness making it punch well above its price.
The Beetroot Tagliatelle with Seared Scallops and Salsa Verde is an unusual dish that I have matched with unusual wines! Firstly, Drink Me, Douro White, Niepoort is a very easy to drink Portuguese white with its sumptuous green apple and peach fruits teasing the taste buds accompanied by minerality and subtle use of oak. Winemaker, Dirk Niepoort, is known for his fabulous Ports, as well as table wine, along with eccentric label styles – the Drink Me being no exception! Inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the story board label shows a series of shadow puppets adorning the bottle.
My second unusual wine is Etna Bianco, Benanti whose grapes are grown at 750 metres on Mount Etna, Italy. The high altitude and volcanic soils result in this mineral-rich, slightly smoky dry white which shows grapefruit, lemon and ripe melon flavours combined with yellow apples and honeysuckle. Delicious and refreshing with enough depth and character to match up to this rich dish.
