Lovely crunchy black fruit, fresh and lively palate with soft tannins on the finish. Attractive, easy and forward with great depth of flavour. From a winery just inland from Pescara on the Adriatic coast.
Now that we can start having (legal) parties again, this is just the sort of thing I’d like to serve to my friends and family. Sourced from a family-owned winery near Pescara, it’s a fruity, perfumed, unoaked bundle of joy, with lots of lift and texture, layers of plum and red cherry, lively acidity and just enough tannin to give it some food-friendly grip and structure. Simple but delicious Italian reds like this are a staple of my home-drinking repertoire and apparently I’m not the only one: the Tanners staff buy Campotino in “large quantities”. Juicy with the taste of red cherries, and unoaked, it is woven through with flavours of dried herbs and (in a nice, savoury, way) dust, and finishes with a refreshing tang that makes it very good with food. Sausages or meatballs would be a natural match, but so would almost any cooked tomato pasta sauce or aubergine parmigiana. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph, 22nd November 2021
Light enough to enjoy at lunchtime but imbued with lively black fruit — it’s no wonder staff at Tanners have nicknamed this “the great reviver”. Produced from grapes grown at altitude on the Adriatic coast, it’s fruity and medium-bodied, with hints of spice. A bargain at less than £10. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times, 7th November 2021

Tenuta del Priore
This winery, situated in the hills inland from Pescara, was founded in 1973 by three cousins, Vincenzo and his brother Giulio with Antonio Mazzocchetti. Believing in the quality potential of the area, they gave up the building industry in Rome and swapped to supplying the city with quality wine from their 30 hectares.
The downturn of the 1980s led to problems and Giulio was bought out by his cousins and the focus changed more to bulk wines. In 2003 Fabrizio, son of Antonio, joined having learnt his trade outside the region, particularly with the white wines in Alto Adige at the famous San Michele Appiano Cantine. He re-focussed on quality and in particular the quality of the Montepulciano grape, taking over completely in 2008. He now runs the estate together with his wife Giovanna.
The 40 hectares of vineyards, situated high up in the Colline Pescaresi in sight of the Adriatic, have been completely replanted with the emphasis on indigenous grapes, such as Pecorino, Trebbiano and Montepulciano, grown at altitudes over 250 metres high and with lower yields. Three ranges are produced, of which the Campotino is for fruit-driven, early drinking wines, fermented in stainless steel or concrete with no oak ageing. The vines here are younger and on clay soils. The Col del Mondo wines are selected from lower yielding, older vines on heavier calcareous-clay and morainic soils and see slightly longer ageing although again, they are designed to be ready to drink.
Across almost all of the country the 2020 vintage is looking very good indeed with ripe fruit and lovely aromatics. A classic if not straight forward vintage 2019 has delivered some excellent wines but in smaller quantity. Overall, the results are very good in 2018, though a warm wet early summer led to disease pressures in many parts of the country. The North East, home to Prosecco amongst others did particularly well; so too did Tuscany and Piedmont but yields are a little down in some estates. 2017 saw a small crop of excellent wines; spring frosts and a later heatwave nicknamed ‘Lucifer’ reduced yields, but you’ll find good results on the whole with excellent results in Piedmont. Yields were down in 2016 but quality is high, Piedmont and Tuscany at least as good as 2015. 2015 is generally an excellent vintage across Italy, perhaps reds having the edge over whites. A year that necessitated a lot of work in the vineyards due to the rains, 2014 has produced some surprisingly good results with elegant fresh wines across the country. The long, cool growing season of 2013 produced aromatic, well-balanced wines, whilst 2012 showed particularly well in Tuscany and in sheltered sites in Piedmont. A warm growing season in 2011 gave powerful wines with ripe tannins in contrast to the cooler season of 2010 which gave fresher wines for mid-term drinking. 2009 was another warm year with higher alcohol, ripe tannins and good aromatics.
