It’s the perfect month to make you see red
Don’t go expecting the flavour of cooked strawberries and vanilla from this very modern rioja: the high percentage (82%) of Grenache makes for a wine that is sleeker and lighter on its feet, and wears its alcohol lightly.
New-wave riojas are more likely to be made by newer wineries or run by the younger generation who have made wine in other countries and are seeking a point of difference from larger producers who prioritise consistency. Aldonia, for instance, specialises in garnacha rather than the traditional tempranillo, which is one reason for its 15% abv.
82% Garnacha, 15% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano matured for 12 months in oak barrels. Paler than the Vendimia 2015 and the nose is subtler. Less bumptious and a bit more reticent at this stage but with an attractive stoniness on the finish. Good balance and a real future. 16.5/20 Drink 2018–2023
This is all of 15% alcohol, doesn't taste it but I would be pretty wary of any second bottle.
