Quinta do Noval is better known for port but makes excellent wines too, like this blend of touriga nacional, syrah, touriga francesa and tinto cão. It appeals to both the hedonist and classicist in me. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telelgraph, 27th July 2021
Named after the grand old cedar tree that stands on the terrace in front of the house, this is Noval's flagship red wine, based on Touriga Nacional with Syrah, Touriga Franca, and a drop of Tinto Cão. Very Douro! A remarkably showy and well-defined, perfumed character with a great density of blue, black and red fruits. On the full side of medium-bodied, super freshness, palpable energy, and a pleasing elegance on the finish. As always, this will drink well on release. 3-9 years. "...slick and deep with perfectly ripe, succulent brambly fruit.David Williams, The Guardian, 20th June 2021
Quinta do Noval is the only "Portuguese" house to have gained a reputation in the English market. First appearing in land registries in 1715, it was sold after the phylloxera outbreak to the distinguished Port shipper António José da Silva in 1894.
He and his family transformed the estate, building the distinctive wide terraces with whitewashed walls. Noval was the first to introduce stencilled bottles, old tawnies and LBV. In 1982 following a disastrous fire, a new lodge was built under the auspices of Cristiano Van Zeller and Noval were the first to move their stocks from Oporto to the Douro. In 1993 it was sold to the AXA group and under the guidance of Englishman Christian Seely is producing premier league Port. Noval produces the legendary Nacional in good years, from a small parcel of ungrafted vines.
