Producer: René Bouvier
Practical buildings on the Dijon road out of Gevrey are home to the accomplished grower Bernard Bouvier who came to our attention on the recommendation of star producer Bernard Dugat. With his first harvest in 1982 and in sole charge of the family domaine since 1992, Bernard now has 17 ha in Gevrey, Fixin and Marsannay, with the latter two being great sources of better value burgundies.

These new premises have also afforded him the space to work, and we no longer have to taste in the kitchen of his family home either! Like Bernard Dugat’s fruit, Bouvier’s comes from extremely low yields and organic cultivation, becoming certified organic in 2013. The range has recently been supplemented with several wines from share-farmed en fermage vineyards. Bernard has refined his winemaking so that his Gevreys are now some of the most precise expressions of terroir that one can find, along with very fine fruit flavours and sensual tannins. As much as anything this is down to less extraction before and during fermentation: there's no need to force the extraction, says Bernard, a beautiful grape gives everything that it has to give. They are regularly very well written up in the French wine guides, but he remains largely overlooked by British wine writers.
