This estate is headed by Paul Pillot whose grandfather Jean-Baptiste Pillot was born in Chassagne-Montrachet in 1858. Jean-Baptiste was a cooper and tended a few vines. From these small beginnings there are now three Pillot domaines in Chassagne, not to be confused, which are all run by his descendants, among whom is also Madame Germain of Domaine Henri Germain in Meursault, a long-time supplier to Tanners.
Thierry Pillot, a friendly, open young man, and his sister Christelle are increasingly taking the reins, and between them have experience of winemaking in Australia, South Africa and Oregon. The 13 ha estate mostly comprises vines in Chassagne-Montrachet, but also has small holdings in Saint-Aubin and Santenay. As ever, winemaking here is sensitive; they use no added yeast and no new barrels for the lighter vintages. One year they simply returned them to the supplier! Those sorts of decisions take courage but are fundamental to making great wines.
Lying Abroad/En Primeur/In Bond Wines
Wines offered ‘Lying Abroad’ or ‘En Primeur’ provide a good way to secure some of the most sought after wines at opening prices. In addition we ensure it is the cheapest way to buy favourite mid-priced wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône, so please ask us for our offers or check our website for latest reports. Prices are clearly marked in our sales literature and are exclusive of duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT. Shipment of claret and Port normally takes place around 30 months after the vintage, burgundy and Rhône usually more quickly. A second invoice for the duty, shipping, marine insurance and VAT on the value of the wine is charged at time of shipment. At today’s rates these are approximately £2.95 plus VAT per bottle for wines and £3.75 plus VAT for Port. There are no further charges for deliveries to a UK mainland home or work address. Your Lying Abroad purchases are covered under The Bunch Code of Practice which can be sent on request or viewed here.
